New Year, New Obsessions

By: Hadiza Mshelia

With another new year comes new obsessions. I can attest to that statement.  Many people, including me, have unlocked new interests and hobbies that we enjoy doing. Whether it’s discovering new music, tv shows, clothing, or food. To kick things off, here are some obsessions that I’ve acquired so far in 2024.

momma

Recently, I discovered Momma. One of their songs was suggested to me on Spotify while I was listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s, “ballad of a homeschool girl.” I was drawn to the vibe of the music, an alternative, early 2000s rock-pop feel. It reminded me of Avril Lavigne, Nirvana, and Paramore. As time went on, I dug further into their discography. Right now, my favorite songs are “Bang Bang,” “Biohazard,” “Derby,” “Bug House,” and “Sunday.” If you want to jam out and feel like a rockstar, I recommend giving Momma a listen!

pinterest

Do not get me started on Pinterest (combination of the words “pin” and “interest”), where you get to pin your interests and organize them into boards accordingly. This site has served as inspiration for my nails, my hairstyles, and my bedroom. Overall, it keeps me put together and helps me figure out my vibe with each pin.

When deciding on what posters to put in my room this year, Pinterest was a lifesaver! The posters I chose mostly relied on my music taste. I like alternative, R&B, rock, and pop music artists such as Mac Miller, Oasis, SZA, Lana Del Rey, TV Girl, Sade, and Deftones. It seems like a lot, but that’s what I like!

In addition to music, I also enjoy 90s and 2000s movies. My sole poster from that department is of the 90s teen flick, “10 Things I Hate About You,” starring the late Heath Ledger. I must say, Pinterest does a good job helping me organize day to day things.

depop

Home of digital circular fashion, Depop  has been one of my many favorite places to shop lately. I have the chance to explore items that sellers are displaying from their own closets! In addition, by selling my own clothes, I get to make some extra money and show off my fashion taste.

What makes Depop so appealing to me is the ability to show off items from a variety of authentic fashion tastes. I also love the opportunity to connect with strangers based on common fashion interests.

Even though I wasn’t active on Depop that much last year, I decided to give it a shot in January. Most of the items included on my page are my old clothes, which I never took the tags off of (Sorry, Mom!). Recently, I made my first sale since creating my account in high school!

Altar’d state Cowgirl Boots

Last Christmas, I got these cute cowgirl boots from Altar’d State. I already have two boots that are similar; a black pair I thrifted from Buffalo Exchange, and a pair gifted to me by my cousin, which were dark gray with blue accents. But, I’ve been seriously digging the white boots for the last month or so. It may or may not have  to do with the fact that they’re “in” right now. I was enamored when I received them as a Christmas present, especially with them being in high demand. I am so happy to have them in my possession!

Effy Marella

This semester, I’ve been working with Effy Marella for my music marketing internship. Marella is a talented, up and coming singer-songwriter based in New Hampshire. As an intern, I utilize public relations, social media, and graphic design skills to promote her content.

Marella is inspired by a plethora of genres such as indie, alternative, rock, grunge, and bedroom pop. Her music has a cutting- edge vibe. I love how she brings unique combinations of genres to attract a larger audience. So far, working with someone with such a broad repertoire and vast talent is nothing short of amazing.

Out of her songs that she has released so far, with more to come in the near future, my favorites are “Shoes” and “Bleachers.” If you need to scream or cry, these are  my go to songs!

In just the first month and a half of this year, I have discovered so many obsessions that I didn’t realize how much I loved until now. As the year goes by, I will definitely add more obsessions to the list, and I hope you all will do the same!
