2024 Ins and Outs

By: Atiya Dasté

It’s finally time to lay 2023 to rest and say goodbye. As we step into 2024, we must ask ourselves – what's in, what's out, and what's timeless? Listen up: People pleasing is out. Step one? Telling the truth. So, I will be here to keep you in the loop of what is hot and what is not this new year.

INS

FUR

If you're curious what winter fashion trend has taken the fashion girlies by storm, check out their latest Vogue spread. Fur, fur, fur. 2024 is all about fur. Think of old Hollywood glamor or Samantha Jones. I'm not saying you need Kardashian money to buy off the rack – go to your nearest vintage thrift store or please go faux. Sure, leather and puffer coats are trending, but fur adds a touch of extravagance. While fur coats have been a staple in fashion for decades, modern fashion has evolved so much and so has our fleece. A fur coat is the best way to step into 2024 with all dramatics and the only way the divas are staying warm these days.

PHOTOS…OF EVERYTHING

From my morning coffee, what's inside my purse, or even my bouquet, I am romanticizing life and taking photos of EVERYTHING. In the age of digital camera and film obsession, I, as well as many others, have found a new love for the simplification of the world. If you find it beautiful, take a photo. Even if it will just be you seeing it.

LEOPARD PRINT

The leopard print revival is upon us and it's ruling the reintroduction of the 2014 indie sleaze aesthetic. Leopard is the pattern of the year. I'm sure you've seen the ease into this trend with the rise of leopard fur this winter, but we're taking it ten notches further. We're expanding this to pants, skirts, bags, tops, stockings, you name it. Leopard is ruling the runways and all our Pinterest boards. This year we're ditching the leopard taboo of y2k trashy jersey girl summers and are taking it back, this time as a neutral.

The Sex and the City Effect

From Cosmopolitans to dinner parties, the infamous “Sex and the City effect” is back in 2024, and it's better than ever. Our Mr. Bigs and Aidens come and go, but friendship is forever. 2024 is all about girlhood, and oh-so-many shoes. This year the dolls are back to romanticizing their friendship dates and  dressing up to go into town. Clubbing is over and dolling around in chic outfits at bars is in. “Sex and the City'' portrays the single female as self-assured and confident, and emphasizes the importance of female friendships. The single girl trope is back and better than ever: put on your kitten heels, grab your friends, and have a night on the town.

Saying No

NO. Too hostile? As a wise drunk roommate told me, “Rude is real.” This year is all about being real, so people-pleasing is officially out, but do you know what's slowly creeping in? Saying no. “No” is a full sentence; it doesn't need an explanation. Being selfish has a negative connotation, but sometimes you must be. Stop over-explaining yourself and trying to justify your decisions. Trust me, people will accept “no,” and it's just time that you do as well.

OUTS

BLACKING OUT

Come closer, I have a little secret to tell you. You can have fun going out without blacking out. College culture has influenced the normalization of blacking out every time you go out and drink. I think it's more normal to hear, “I’ve blacked out this whole weekend,” than to hear, “I haven't drank for a month.” One of the many effects of alcohol consumption is that it causes chemical disruption in the brain’s hippocampus. Most likely, when we were drinking, we were celebrating something, or with our close friends. What's so fun about doing that, but not being able to remember it? Slow down, and let's make memories to remember.

Hook Up Culture

No, it's not you, it's them. I'm a firm believer that if they wanted to, they would. Hookup culture is the main issue of our generation's relationships. While some “friends with benefits” situations may lead to mutual attachments, it is not a dependable way to develop feelings. It's not a situationship, it's someone not able to prioritize you and your feelings. The apps aren't safe, I would know – I've been on them for a year. They do nothing for you but make you compromise your feelings and end up settling for something you don't want to do. We all have wants, and expressing them is healthy, not a weakness. There's nothing wrong with wanting no strings, but if you know you want them attached, don’t be afraid to go get it. In 2024, we need to bring back old-school love and say goodbye to hookup culture.

Snapchat

Rest in peace to our favorite selfie app, the mother of the infamous doggy filter, unicorn vomit filter, and the origin of the 100-day streaks. It's hard to say but, Snapchat is dead. Every time I open the app, I'm reminded of an ex with a photo memory of us three years ago, or a video of me with a high school nemesis. I’d much rather text someone on iMessage, especially romantically. It's time we say goodbye to 2016, and ghost the ghost of Snapchat.

MICROTRENDS

Microtrends come just as fast as they go. From Ugg minis to Stanley cups, once our generation likes something, we love hard. Following intense and short-lived trends is unachievable for most people. Let's stop micro-trending and make our own aesthetics. You don't need people to tell you what is and isn’t cool to wear. It's always fun to follow cute trends, especially ones that we love, but once it comes down to boasting unachievable items it just isn't fun anymore.

Buying New Clothes for Every Occasion

You may have heard the viral TikTok sound from the iconic early 2000’s television show, Lizzie McGuire, “Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater.” But, have you seen the rest of the scene? “I may be an outfit repeater, but you are an outfit remember, which is just as pathetic.” Please stop breaking the bank by buying a new outfit for every new occasion. Try to buy more classic clothing items to style them all differently. For example, we all have a little black dress. Try styling it with a belt or patterned stockings layered with knee knee-high boots or a statement purse.

So, we’ve officially slipped out of sneakers and into platform boots. Remember, as the seasons change, so do the tides of fashion and innovation.  What’s in today may be out tomorrow, but the experiences we collect along the way will forever be en vogue. This year is all about you, so note that the most timeless accessory is the courage to express ourselves. After all, the most fabulous trend to follow is always your own.
