Turning Lingerie into Everyday Looks

Ladies, have you ever bought a beautiful piece of lingerie you end up wearing for 30 seconds until your significant other, booty call, or FWB takes it off and then forget about it in your underwear drawer?

Well, those days are over.

Anything that makes you feel sexy and beautiful should get some time outside of the bedroom. That bustier or lace bodysuit deserves to see the light of day, and you should get to feel good in it whenever you please.

Also, have you seen the price tags at Victoria’s Secret? Not only is lingerie sexy, but it’s way too expensive to only wear once in a while.

Typically we buy lingerie for intimate experiences, and depending on your partner, those experiences don’t always last very long. So, why don’t we get a bang for our buck and incorporate our slips and bodices into our everyday fashion?

If you’re thinking that wearing lingerie as an outfit is too risqué, trust me I was with you. The first time I incorporated lingerie into my outfit, I needed constant reassurance I didn’t look like I was trying too hard, or that I was being “extra.”

When I stepped out that night, I felt like Emma Stone in that movie “Easy A.” She walks down the hall in a black bustier and jeans and EVERYONE is staring. But, she takes it in stride and just blew them kisses and kept on strutting. A queen.

As it turns out, that’s exactly what I did, and it’s what I still do. Do I walk down Broad Street blowing kisses? No, that’s ridiculous. But, I just keep walking if someone does a double-take — as long as I feel good, who really cares?

For some reason there’s a stigma around women dressing sexy, it diminishes us, it sends people a “message” about us. It’s time for that to end, embracing your body and your sexuality is not a crime, and that’s why I’m making this guide to lingerie looks.

LAYER

One of the greatest ways to make an outfit more low-key is by layering. Whether you’re throwing a turtleneck or a t-shirt underneath, it’s a great way to turn lingerie into an outfit you can wear out to the bar or around campus. You can get your turtleneck from H&M (like me), or you can thrift a t-shirt from Goodwill like my beautiful co-model. Layering will give you a sense of being modest while still feeling sexy.

Leather and Lace

Leather and lace is a truly timeless combination. If you have a staple leather jacket in your wardrobe (everyone should), pair it with a slip or a bodysuit. It’ll give you a sense of comfort so you don’t feel like you’re bearing it all, but you’ll still feel like a badass. If you want to go real bold, you can throw on a pair of funky animal print pants like I did, or you can keep it simple.

Got a date night coming up? A dinner party? Brunch with the girls? Say no more. A blazer makes any outfit classier. That being said, grab your favorite blazer, a skirt, and some heels and you’ll be the perfect combination of classy and sexy. Also, just a word of advice, now that houndstooth is making a comeback, take full advantage. It’ll make you look like a classy business woman from the 90s who carries a pager and has her shit together.

Love yourself

When my roommate stepped out in this funky pant and bralette combo, she knew she looked good. I know this is corny, but loving yourself is essential. In order to feel comfortable in any of these outfits, you have to love yourself and your body. You have to embrace your sexuality and not be afraid to flaunt it, but that all starts by simply loving yourself. Providing yourself the confidence to rock any look you please is the key to turning your lingerie into a wardrobe staple.

Now, bust open that underwear drawer, untangle that lace teddy from your laundry day undies, and turn it into an outfit that’ll turn heads in all the right ways.
