Voting is in Season
By: Raven Lawson
We are in the midst of the 2020 presidential election and thousands of people have already cast their ballots. In a time when voter suppression is a huge concern for many historically marginalized communities and individuals, social media platforms and fashion are doing what they can to encourage voters.
Instagram recently launched its #RunwayToThePolls campaign in collaboration with I Am a Voter, the Black in Fashion Council, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. This initiative calls upon people to post photos or videos of themselves in their most stylish voter apparel, strutting to their mailboxes or polling stations to cast their votes.
So far, notable celebrities and designers including Candice King, Christian Siriano, Mandy Moore, and Will Ferrell have all participated and voted early to the tune of Lizzo’s “Vote;” an original song the artist wrote for the social media platform.
But you don’t have to rock Stuart Weitzman’s $700 “vote” boots or wear Fashion Weekworthy outfits when you cast your ballots. Here are some fashionable voter (and budget)-friendly alternatives:
The Gap Collective series along with their “Stand United” tees were designed by Black artist and Gap Inc. employee Stephennie Factor. The aim of the collection, according to the Gap website, is to celebrate “the spirit of activism and the energy of forward movement.” The brand will also be donating $25,000 each to non-profit organizations When We All Vote and Rock the Vote.
2.) Rock the Vote x Popsockets $15
As a part of their “Poptivism” initiative, Popsockets created a series of graphic, inclusive voter designs and messages. Plus, 50% of all sales will be donated to Rock the Vote.
3.) American Eagle ‘This Is Our Time’ Customizable T-Shirt $25
With 100% of its proceeds going to nonprofit organization HeadCount, this customizable tee comes with three markers so that you have the freedom to fill in the blank with whatever is important to you right now.
This minimalistic pin is just the right size to pin on any article of clothing. Madewell will be donating 100% of the proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union in support of their mission to protect the right to vote for all.
5.) More Than A Vote ‘I Voted’ Tee $25
Lebron James’ organization More Than A Vote created graphic apparel to help fight against voter suppression. All proceeds will go to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.
No matter what you decide to wear, it is important that you go out and exercise your right to vote. With this election, you can determine the change you want to see, so use your voice and use your vote.
